Layoff: Facing Reality and Moving Forward

This is the story of how I faced the harsh reality of getting laid off and the struggle to find the strength to move forward.

The Feeling

Getting laid off is never easy. One day, you’re part of the company, the next day, you’re out the door. It’s a sudden blow to your confidence, literally destroying it. You may feel stupid, worthless, and vulnerable. Emotions flood in; frustration, anger, and confusion. Every night, I found myself asking the same stupid question: “Why me? Why not someone else?” It’s hard to make sense of it all. At least, that’s exactly how I felt after getting laid off.

Play the Chess Piece Carefully

The corporate world CAN be cutthroat (though not always). We often climb the ladder thinking that success is about doing great work only (spoiler: it’s not), but in reality, it’s a game of politics and timing. There’s a lot of cunning, knowing when to play your chess pieces.

Timing is critical, especially when the market isn’t in your favor. Right now, the tech bubble has burst (speaking as someone who worked in tech). Companies are tightening their belts, promotions are scarce, and layoffs are becoming all too common as businesses aim for efficiency.

I realized I didn’t “play my chess” well enough. The result? I was laid off. It’s a tough pill to swallow when you realize that being the “best” isn’t always enough. And when things go wrong, it’s easy to feel like you’re just a casualty of the bigger system. But hey, that’s life. Every action has a consequence. Play well, and you get the rewards. Play badly, and you face the punishment.

Bounce Back

But here’s the thing: “You will find a way” It’s what I say to myself every damn morning in the bathroom. Sure, it sounds desperate, but it keeps me moving forward. Don’t waste too much energy on regret. Feeling regret is normal, it’s part of the process, but don’t let it paralyze you. Don’t stay stuck in your head, grieving and doing nothing.

Randomly, these words came to mind when I watched a video:

“Nothing happens until something moves” - Albert Einstein.

That quote was like a punch to my face, echoing in my mind. It reminded me I had to do something, anything.

So, I began. I started learning everything I could; like surfing until I tore a muscle, managing my money so I can survive during these tough times, exploring Framer to create a better portfolio, investing in crypto because the timing felt right… the list goes on. I won’t list everything, but the point is, I kept going. I believe if something is meant to be, it’ll eventually come to you. But you have to put in the effort first.

A Little Advice

For those still holding onto your jobs: be grateful. Lay low. Don’t chase after titles or promotions unless you really know the terrain. And save your damn money. Create a solid financial plan so that if you ever get hit with a layoff, you’re ready. And please, stop showing off online. The economy is tough, and not everyone is doing well. Be considerate and wise.

For my fellow designers: keep your portfolio updated. Seriously.

Not Always a Happy Ending

Life doesn’t always have a happy ending and that’s okay. It took me a while to accept this, but eventually, I realized it was just part of the journey.

I’m grateful to all my friends who supported me through tough times. Your kindness means more than words can express.

“I will find a way and so will you”

Till next time, keep well! I hope my words help, even if just a little bit.
